There are several hotels and hostels in São Filipe but, if you are looking for authenticity, there is simple accommodation in Chã das Caldeiras.
Following the eruption of the volcano in 2014, the village of Chã das Caldeiras had to reconstruct itself. Things are constantly improving and new bed and breakfasts, as well as restaurants, are being built.
Here are two very different options:
Hotel Zaguate ****
This is the largest hotel of the island, situated in São Filipo. It stands in a spectacular position on the headland overlooking the ocean.
The hotel has all the facilities you might expect; air conditioning, satellite TV, and free Wi-Fi.
As well as a pleasant pool area with sun terrace, there is a bar and a simple restaurant. Here you can enjoy a continental style buffet breakfast and in the evenings sample local cuisine and a little Fogo wine.
Pensão Lava
Situated in Chã das Caldeiras this is a new construction.
The accommodation is basic but has a definite charm. Built on the lava flow you can almost feel it beneath your feet.
What it lacks in luxury it makes up for in the stunning landscape and unique ambience.
Wine tastings are particularly popular.
