Tour the sensational sights of Santiago

Santiago is the largest of the Cape Verde islands, and is home to the nation’s capital city of Praia. It is also the location of one of the island’s four international airports, Praia International Airport, which lies 3km from the capital. Praia is a commercial centre that ships tropical fruit, sugar cane and coffee. The city centre is commonly referred to as Plato because of its location on a plateau. It is located on the southern part of the island and offers great weather all year round. The city has many attractions and amenities including Albuquerque Square and The Presidential Palace which was constructed at the end of the 19th century. Both landmarks are located in the colonial city centre.

The idyllic town of Tarrafal can be found on the northern part of the island, and is the perfect place for a day visit. The fishing town is very busy on weekends and is incredibly popular amongst holidaymakers and tourists. Early morning sunrises provide sensational views of the boats heading out to sea for a day’s fishing. Tarrafal is small so you can easily take in its beauty and amenities in one day. Its beach is a big draw for many with its soft sand, palm trees and pleasant atmosphere. There are many snacks and beverages available along the beach and it is the ideal location for a lively day of family fun under the sun.

Cidade da Ribeira Grande de Santiago was once the capital and took its place on the World Cultural Heritage list in July 2009. Overlooked by a mighty fortress, the city boasts a selection of romantic little houses along with the Nossa Senhora do Rosario church. Enthroned above the northern part of Rue Banana, it is the oldest standing colonial church in the world and a striking vision.
